Palm Pre Review

The Palm Pre is the latest competitor in the smartphone market. There's been a lot of buzz about the Pre lately and it may be a serious competitor to the iPhone. The Palm Pre runs the Palm webOS which automatically updates and synchronizes all of your applications. It is currently only available on the Sprint network which means that even if you manage to unlock it you will not be able to use it on any GSM networks. The Pre features EVDO Rev A and averages a download speed of 634Kbps, and 3.1 inch touch screen display with a HVGA 320x480 resolution and 24-bit color. There is also a slide-out QWERTY keyboard which is great for the integrated IM, SMS, and MMS. In case you get lost or just need directions the Pre also has a built-in GPS. WiFi means fast connection speeds and the ability to save on your data plan. It also has an ambient light sensor, accelerometer, and proximity sensor. This truly is an advanced smartphone. Like any phone it features Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR (Enhanced Data Rate) and A2DP Stereo Bluetooth support. The Pre has a built-in 3 megapixel camera with LED flash. Unfortunately, there is no video support but there are rumors that this can be fixed with a future software update. There is also 8 GB of internal memory but only 7 GB is user accessible. Unfortunately there is no support for external memory. The Palm Pre does have a MicroUSB connector with USB 2.0 for connecting to a computer or other device. Another great feature is Palm Synergy which can synchronize your Google, Facebook, and Outlook calendars so that you can see everything in one place. It also synchronizes all of your email contacts so that you only have to have 1 contact for each person. The Pre's webOS also lets you keep multiple applications like email, maps, photos, videos, websites, and calendars open at the same time and move easily between them. Online Palm services automatically backup all of your data and can restore it if something happens. And if your phone gets lost or stolen with Palm services you can remotely erase all of the data on your Pre. You can also download the increasing number of apps from the app store. The Palm webOS is an amazing operating system with room for improvement. The Palm Pre weighs in at 4.76 ounces. The Palm Pre is an overall great phone, not perfect, but great. The OS needs some work and video recording would be great. Hopefully future software updates will add new features like video recording and more.
