Augen Gentouch 78, The Cheapest and Worst Android Tablet on The Market

The Augen Gentouch 78 is probably the cheapest Android tablet on the market, at just $150. It is also one of the very few that are readily available for consumers to purchase, as it is being sold at Kmart. The specifications of the Augen Gentouch 78 don't really seem bad at first, but when you look at the Gentouch's performance, you realize that you get what you pay for. The Augen Gentouch 78 has a 7 inch touchscreen display with a resolution of 800x480. Unfortunately, the touchscreen display is resistive, but for this price point you shouldn't really expect anything better. Most of the reviews also indicate that you have to press pretty hard on the display for your touch to actually register and that the touchscreen also lags. The Gentouch 78 also features an 800 MHz processor and 256 MB of RAM. This makes even the worst Android smartphones look fast. The Gentouch also has 2 GB of internal memory which is expandable via a microSD card slot, which supports cards of up to 16 GB. There is also no accelerometer. As for connectivity, WiFi is the only thing you get. As for hardware on the outside of the tablet, there isn't really much to talk about. There is a 2.5mm headphone jack (Yeah, that's right, 2.5mm), but Augen says that if you email them they will either send you a pair of 2.5mm headphones or an adapter for 3.5mm headphones. I am assuming that there is also a built-in speaker, but their website is pretty light on specifications. Another downside to the Augent Gentouch 78 is that there is no home button on the front, which makes it fairly hard to get back to the home screen. Now, lets talk about the software. The Gentouch 78 comes with Android 2.1 installed, but Augen says that there may be a possibility of an upgrade to 2.2 later on. Augen advertises the tablet as being able to access the Android Market out of the box, and it seems that this was possible at first, but it was later disabled by Google. The Gentouch also has Gmail and a few other applications installed. It actually turns out the Augen had installed a pirated version of Android onto the Gentouch, and Google disabled most of the features. Augen has said that they are working with Google to resolve their issues, but I don't think that you'll have access to the Android Market on the Augen Gentouch anytime soon. I haven't actually used the Augen Gentouch, but from reviews that I have read and videos that I have seen it seems like the tablet is pretty lacking. I guess you can't complain much because of the cheap $150 price tag, but that doesn't mean it has to be terrible. It seems that web browsing is okay, but slow and laggy. Overall, the Augen Gentouch 78 is a big let down, and we wouldn't recommend it. If, for some strange reason you want to buy the Augen Gentouch 78, it is available now at Kmart stores for just $150.

  1. If you have patience and upgrade the system software, and add 3rd party apps to tweak the device, it is actually a nice device for the money.
