BeamBox Essential G2 review

The BeamBox Essential G2 is a tiny pocket projector weighing just 75g. The Essential G2 lets you have a VGA resolution of 640x480 on up to a 73 inch projection from up to 3 meters away. The Essential G2 only has 20 lumens brightness which means that its not that great for dark environments but it is a pocket projector so you can't expect much more than that. The Essential G2 also has 1 GB of built-in memory which you can use as a flash drive or put photos on and watch them on the go with the supplied USB power adapter. It has a contrast ratio of 100:1 and an aspect ratio of 4:3 which is great for all kinds of tasks. The Essential G2 does not have a built-in battery like some other pocket projectors but it is really easy to use. You can just connect it to your computer via the USB 2.0 port and it will detect it as a secondary monitor, you can then use it to mirror your display or extend it. It also comes with a tri-pod and remote control. The BeamBox Essential G2 pocket projector is great as a secondary display for when you are on the go and is available for pre-order now for £220 or $250 and will ship on July 29th.

  1. This thing is terrible, as is Beambox's support.

Delivery was delayed for two weeks while they located a supply of unspecified cables which they had run out of.

Upon receipt I attached the projector to my computer via the supplied USB cable and was met with "USB video - No signal" which despite everything I tried, was the only result I could obtain. Additionally the proprietary software, which was supplied on the projector's internal memory, caused my Vista PC to suffer a fatal error and required a System Restore. I also tried an XP computer - no joy there either, despite uninstalling and reinstalling the software a few times.

The manual which comes with the unit is a photocopied sheet which is poorly translated from Chinese going by the grammar used and the fact that the software has only two language options - English and Chinese. Beambox do not answer their telephones and their LiveChat is permanently offline. I did finally get an email response from them with the useful suggestion that I ensure the unit was plugged into the computer....

The unit itself is very light but has a noisy fan. The brightness although an advertised 25 lumens is nowhere near this and compares poorly with Optoma projectors of only 10 lumens.

All in all an abysmal effort compounded by poor customer service and I shall be returning the unit and seeking a full refund.

  3. Have a similar problem with customer service - had to return the unit, and now they seem to have dropped off the face of the earth. Haven't had the promised refund, they never answer their phones or emails - in effect they have stolen £250 from me!

Glad that your product works Tackeey, but fear that you will be well in the s**t if you ever need any follow-up service.

There are better products, and certainly much better customer service options out there.

Avoid this bunch of crooks like the plague!

  4. I can only say the same bad things about this company and advise to steer well clear. I ordered the G2 but, despite it saying 10 available, was told they no longer stock it and are moving to the G3 a newer model at the same price! Great I thought, I enquired what the difference was in specifications, the same they replied, 25 lumens of light, 1gb onboard memmory, but much better software.

To my dismay, the unit that arrived is only 12 lumnes, specified in the instructions and has only 32mb storage! Not only that, it's software is terrible on WindowsXp and just about usable on windows7. I asked for a full refund and was told, to return it I need to pay a restocking fee of 15 pounds, plus return postage and my money would be returned in 15 days!

I would also suggest you avoid Beambox like you would "Swine Flu". Use Bonitor or Microjeck and deal with real companies and quality products.
